6a Architects Overview

Tom Emerson and Stephanie Macdonald established 6a Architects in 2001. Long-term cooperation with engineers, horticulturists, and artists have resulted in 6a’s work. The studio is constantly surrounded by teaching and research. Tom Emerson is a professor of architecture and the dean of the ETH Zurich Department of Architecture. He directs a research and design studio that investigates the relationship between making and geography.

6a’s third phase of work with South London Gallery for the SLG Fire Station in Peckham, which won a riba National Award, and the expansion of MK Gallery, which reinterpreted Milton Keynes’ utopian history as elegant and playful art and community building and has become a landmark for the city, both opened in 2019. The Observer called it Building of the Year, and it received a riba Regional Award in 2021. Two mixed-use towers on Hamburg’s waterfront will be finished in 2020, while JW Anderson will open flagship stores in Soho and Seoul.

The studio has received numerous honours, including the Schelling Medal and a Stirling Prize nomination in 2017 for its photography studio complex for photographer Juergen Teller (2016). It also won the RIBA London Building of the Year Award in 2017. Stephanie Macdonald was a nominee for the International Women in Architecture Award in 2018, while Tom Emerson won the Conrad Ferdinand Meyer Prize. Both were awarded an obe in the New Year Honours 2021 for Services to Architecture and Education and Services to Architecture.

6a is now engaged in major projects all around the world. Holborn House, a new modern art foundation in New York; a new community facility in central London; and two office buildings for the Design District in Greenwich are open soon. Victoria State approved 6a’s first project in Australia in 2020, a 13-story mixed-use, landscaped structure in Collingwood, Melbourne, will begin construction in 2021. 6a created the original vision for St Ann’s, Haringey, a 940-home development, and is currently part of the winning team working with the Mayor of London to bring the project to fruition.

The work of 6a architects has been widely published both domestically and internationally. 6a was named one of the 50 Best Architects in the World Today by the prominent Italian magazine Domus in 2020. Never Modern, the practice’s debut book, was released in 2014 by Park Books in Zurich, and El Croquis published the first monograph in 2017.

Services Offered By 6a Architects

6a Architects offers contemporary architecture services through which they include visual and physical connections in the whole construction process. They incorporate British architecture and London’s natural history as much as they can throughout the ground floor to the concrete beams.

Just like what they did to the outstanding Juergen Teller Studio in West London, they can make a coastal house, modern house, dining room, or any part of a house look exceptional. They can design contemporary art galleries to look like the art they contain inside and educational buildings to feel like second homes to those who use them.

6a’s British architects have also renovated a contemporary art exhibition centre in East London called Raven Row.

6a Architects Reviews

In my new studio, I have had a donkey, some frogs, a cow, a little lamb, a fox and a dinosaur, Joaquin Phoenix, Rihanna, Charlotte Rampling licking a plate. Doing yoga, watching football, taking pictures for myself, having saunas, playing backgammon, making books, working on exhibitions, my polish student who cooks a meal everyday and photographing what fashion dreams are made of. That studio is my beating heart – it’s fantastic and so much better that I dreamed of.

This architectural review is by Juergen Teller, a German fashion and fine art photographer.

Summary

In this 6a Architects review, we see that 6a Architects successfully addresses architecture’s generative paradox: constructing a permanent and stable thing that is both in constant motion as a construction site and occupied space.

RIBA Accolades and consecutive nominations for the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture — the Mies Van der Rohe Award – have been won by the now 40-strong practice, which has also won significant international competitions and other notable awards.

6a Architects can get inside the untouched corners of architecture and bring it out for the whole world to see.
