What is a UTR number UK?

The UTR number, also referred to as the Unique Taxpayer Reference number is a 10-digit code that is used to identify an individual or business taxpayer. It is primarily used by the HMRC concerning your income tax. Whether you are looking to claim a tax refund or are filing your self-assessment tax return, your unique UTR number is vital.

Similar to your National Insurance number, once you are assigned a unique tax reference number, you have the same one for life.

Where can I find my Unique Taxpayer Reference number?

If you have already been issued your UTR number, there are a variety of HMRC documents you can find it on. This includes:

  • The SA250 letter entitled “Welcome to Self-Assessment” that you received when you first registered.
  • Any paperwork related to your self-assessment tax returns.
  • Any notice you receive reminding you to file your tax return.
  • Your self-assessment account statement
  • Any tax payment reminders you receive

If you handle all your self-assessment tax returns, tax payments, and other related issues online, you can find your UTR number online by logging into your HMRC account.

What happens if I’ve lost my UTR Number?

First and foremost, you mustn’t panic or stress out too much if you lose your UTR number. Check the documents listed above and log into your online HMRC account if you have one. If you are still having trouble locating your lost UTR number, contact the Self-Assessment helpline directly.

You can contact HRMC on either of the numbers below:

  • Telephone: 0300 200 3310
  • Outside UK: +44 161 931 9070

The opening times for these numbers are:

  • Monday through to Friday, from 8 am to 8 pm
  • Sunday, from 9 am to 5 pm

Please note, the HMRC is closed on all bank holidays, Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year’s Day, and Easter Sunday.

Do you need a UTR number to submit a self-assessment tax return?

Simply put, yes. If you are planning on registering as self-employed and looking to complete self-assessment tax returns, you will need your UTR number.

How can I get a UTR Number?

As the HMRC will not give you a UTR number automatically, you need to register for self-assessment tax to get one. There are several different ways you can do this, including:

Registering online for self-assessment

When you set up your own business and are self-employed, you need to register for self-assessment before you can submit any tax returns. If convenient, you can do this easily through the HMRC website. Once you complete the registration you will receive a letter with your UTR number.

By telephone

You can also give HMRC a call on their freephone number, 0300 200 3310. Be aware, you may be required to provide some details and you may still be directed to apply through the website, if possible.

By Post

If the above methods are not applicable or convenient, you can apply for your UTR number by post. This method takes the longest, though, and it may involve several letters to and from the HMRC until they have all the information and documentation they need from you.

What information do I need to register for a UTR Number?

When you register for self-assessment and your UTR number, you need to provide the following information

  • Your full name, current postal address, phone number, and email address
  • Your National Insurance number
  • The date you started working in a self-employed capacity
  • The kind of business you run
  • Your business name, address, phone number and email address

What is a UTR Number for a company?

If you have established a limited company, you will need to register for a separate UTR number. This allows HMRC to keep track of the amount of tax your company owes. Please note, your company number is not the same as a UTR number.

This is also a 10-digit code, much like a personal UTR, and will be assigned to you when you register your company.

As well as business tax payments and rebates and filing tax returns, you will also need your business UTR to pay corporation tax.

Is my UTR number on my payslip?

Yes, if you receive a payslip from an employer or your own company or PAYE coding notices directly from HMRC, your UTR number should be on these documents. Remember, it doesn’t matter how old these documents are, your UTR will never change.

Is My HMRC UTR Number Still Active?

IF you have not de-registered as being self-employed, your UTR number will be active. The only reason your UTR number will not be active is if you have reregistered or have not continued to file self-assessment tax returns regularly. It can be easily reactive it making a payment or filing your self-assessment tax return.

What Happens if You’re Self-Employed and Receive Two UTR Numbers

As you should only have one UTR number if you have a self-assessment account or a limited company, if you believe you have been issued two UTR numbers by mistake, you should contact HMRC immediately. They should be able to resolve the issue quickly.

Can You Use Your Personal UTR Number As Your Limited Company UTR Number?

As we have noted above, your UTR number is just for your self-assessment tax account. You need to register for a separate UTR number for your limited company. Once you incorporate your company at Companies House, it is a unique legal entity.

What if I am not self-employed and still asked for my UTR number?

It is entirely possible you will be asked for your UTR number even if you have not registered as self-employed. If you claim PAYE tax refunds, for example, you still need to file a self-assessment tax return if you want to receive the money.
