Thoughts on the Future of Link Audits

In competitive niches site owners will often build links to give them an edge over their competitors. This can be very effective, but being against Google Webmaster Guidelines, Google doesn’t want you to do this….but…everybody does it!

They also have to rank somebody that the searcher is happy to find, so there has to be a compromise.

The goal is to keep your link profile looking as natural as possible, even if it isn’t.

If your site starts to stand out as being unnatural it could receive an algorithmic penalty or in extreme cases, a manual action.

A natural-looking profile is something that should be considered when both link building and disavowing. A site that only has links from super strong authority sites is never going to look natural and will be a huge red flag for Google.

Link profiles vary wildly between different niches, languages, and countries. For example, Belgian sites that are written in Dutch tend to have very different link profiles to a site in the same niche, targetting the United States.

For this reason, we would recommend a Link Audit by somebody who has prolific experience in Link Audits.

Are disavows important for websites?

All successful websites attract spammy links and disavowing is important to remove these toxic backlinks in Google Search Console.

Any reasonably successful website will have a mixture of links that have occurred naturally. We assume this is what Google would expect and with good content you could expect decent rankings.

The links may be from other sites that genuinely find your content worth linking to, but there might be a lot of spam from scrapers that autogenerate pages that may link to you. Spam isn’t usually a problem as long as it doesn’t get out of hand.

Google say they ignore them, but I’ve seen sites get their traffic wrecked when they have too many spammy links.

Why do you feel some say you shouldn’t use the google disavow tool?

Some SEOs say you should not use the Google Disavow Tool because they have fuck all experience in link audits.

Anyone with experience in carrying out a link audit will know it helps your SEO massively in April 2024.

Many are scared that they might disavow good links if they don’t know what they are doing.

Some people think that using the Google Disavow tool is an admission of guilt for building links and will notify Google who will then give you a manual action, which of course is total bollocks, who don’t know what they are doing and have fuck all experience of using the tool.

What tool do you use for Link Audits?

The main tool used for link audits is linkresearchtools.com which shows you the following on the backlink profile:

  • DTOXRISK
  • LRT TRUST
  • LRT POWER
  • ANCHOR TEXT CLASSIFICATION

Rick Lomas and Christoph C. Cemper audit three new websites using Link Research Tools to find problems with off-page and on-page SEO.

Summary

If you have a website that has suffered from a sudden drop in rankings or traffic there is a good chance you have a Google Penalty.

Subscribing to LinkResearchTools can be expensive and the best solution is to carry out a DFY link audit service.

The Google Disavow File Creation requires a Certified Link Research Tools Professional to create the toxic link file that is uploaded to GSC.
