A Debt Collection Agency has contacted me regarding my NPower Debt

You have been contacted by a debt collection agency regarding your NPower Debt. The most common debt collection firms that collect money for NPower are Buchanan Clark and Wells, Lowell and Arvato, if you have been contacted by either of these please get in contact with our financial advisors.

If you have been contacted by another debt collection agency, please do your research and ensure they are a legitimate and registered company.

This can be found on the companies house website here

I have been contacted by Collections Direct but it says they have been dissolved on the Companies House website?

This has been an issue, we have found through research. The findings we concurred is that Collections Direct WAS a branch of NPower however they are no longer an active company. Adding to this there have been reports of NPower sending threats from a fake firm of debt collectors (Companies House). Npower have said they use these as a ‘last resort’. If you have been sent one of these letters, get in touch with our financial and legal advisors.

Moreover, also discuss getting in touch with the Financial Ombudsman to log a complaint, maybe a good idea.

Are Bailiffs and Debt Collectors the same?

You will be pleased to know they are NOT the same and they are in fact very different.

A Bailiff is more commonly known as an enforcement agent.

A Debt Collector has NO legal powers to get debt, whereas an enforcement agent does have legal powers to get debt.

If a debt collector does knock on the door, all they can ask is if you can set up a payment plan on the debt. They do not have any rights to access the house or anything in it.

What are NPower debt collectors allowed to do

Debt Collectors are allowed to pursue for money owed to the creditors. This can be done by:

  • Writing to you
  • Calling you
  • Sending a doorstop collector to the door (remember they are not allowed to enter your house or have any legal power)

Why is a third party contacting me about debt collection?

Third-party debt collection will only step in for companies like NPower when they are asked to. Debtors will have had plenty of opportunities to settle their bills before the stage where they need to get involved.

What are my next steps?

The best thing to do is gain information on how NPower deal with debts and also to do research on the company that has written to you.

Make sure you actually owe the money, gather all the correspondence you have sent and received from NPower. Cross-reference all the figures and sums you can find. If these amounts are incorrect, you won’t have to pay the debt.

Start making logs of any further correspondence you have with NPower or the debt collectors and take down the names of everyone you speak to. If there are any further issues you will have plenty of information and proof.

Prove the debt isn’t yours if you are unsure the debt is yours. This means NPower have to write to you and prove that you owe the debt and they have to show affirmative evidence that the debt is yours.

If NPower have affirmative proof, or you are sure that you owe the debt and you have the necessary funds. Get in touch with NPower and the debt collectors as soon as possible to ensure that they leave you alone. It may also be an idea to keep ahold of the bank statement which shows you have paid, as sometimes systems can be slow and it may not be cancelled straight away.
